The NHS choir has defeated Justin Bieber to secure the UK’s official Christmas No 1 spot. Following a week-long head-to-head, the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS choir’s charity single, ‘A Bridge Over You’, finished the chart race with 127,000 sales and downloads, nearly 31,000 sales more than the multimillion selling popstar. The choir received a late boost after Bieber urged his own fans to support the cause.
Initially formed for the Gareth Malone’s BBC2 show programme “The Choir: Sing While You Work”, , where they were narrowly beaten in the final, the choir continues to sing for the benefit of patients, staff and the local community. Performances range from singing on the wards, to local concerts and world class concert halls, and recording a CD.
The Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Choir’s song ‘A Bridge Over You’ topped the chart ahead of Bieber’s Love Yourself.
Justin Bieber congratulated the NHS Choir after they beat him to the coveted top spot.
He wrote on Twitter: ‘Just heard the news. Amazing. That is what Christmas is all about. @Choir_NHS congrats!! Very cool [sic]’
Earlier in the week, Bieber encouraged his fans to help the group reach number one.
He said: ‘I’m hearing this UK Christmas race is close…but the @Choir_NHS single is for charity.
‘So for 1 week it’s ok not to be #1. Let’s do the right thing & help them win. It’s Christmas. @Choir_NHS good luck’
We can only say that ‘Justin Bieber has acted like a true gent during the battle for the Christmas number one.
